Our Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization (EDID) Committee was created to foster an equitable and inclusive environment that values and respects diverse perspectives. We will strive to create a welcoming environment where everyone feels safe and that they belong.

Objectives
  • Review and enhance departmental policies and practices through an EDID lens
  • Raise awareness and understanding of EDID principles among faculty, staff, and students
  • Identify and remove barriers to full participation and representation
  • Support decolonization efforts in curriculum and practices
  • Invite external experts to share EDID insights with the committee and department
The Department of Geography and Environment is firmly committed to working towards equity, diversity, inclusivity, and decolonization in our campus community, including members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. We strive to create an environment that is free from all forms of discrimination, including but not limited to homo/transphobia, racism (anti-Black, anti-Indigenous, anti-Asian, and anti-Latinx), colourism, islamophobia, antisemitism, xenophobia, sexism, ablism, ageism, classism, fatphobia, and religious and linguistic discrimination. We believe all forms of discrimination are unacceptable, regardless of intent, and we will make a concerted effort to minimize all forms of violence, harassment, bullying, and victimization. For example, we are committed to using community members’ preferred names and gender pronouns. Lastly, we recognize that creating an inclusive environment is an ongoing process and we welcome suggestions about how we can make Geography and Environment a more welcoming and supportive place.

The Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion is involved in campus-wide learning opportunities for all students and employees at Western.
