2026-2027 Scholarship Information
In addition to the funding outlined in your letter of offer, graduate students can access a variety of internal and external scholarships:
- The Department of Geography and Environment and Western University offer internal awards to recognize academic excellence and support research.
- The School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (SGPS) provides a comprehensive list of additional funding opportunities.
- Eligible students are strongly encouraged to apply for major external awards, including:

Awarded annually to a full-time graduate Master’s or Doctoral student in Geography who is engaging in fieldwork toward their thesis research. Preference will be given to students studying geographic techniques, physical geography, or wilderness settings. Applications must be submitted to the Department Chair of Geography with a statement outlining their fieldwork plans and travel costs by May 1st. Final selection will be made by the Awards Committee in the Department of Geography, in consultation with the Department Chair. At least one member of the committee must hold membership in the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. This award is made possible through a generous gift from Dr. Micha Pazner and Mrs. Nancy Pazner.
Dr. Micha Pazner is a retired Faculty member who taught in Geography at Western University from 1990 to 2016. He believes that to be a good Geographer you have to master spatial thinking and then do something about it, including being out in the field. It is Dr. Pazner’s hope that this award will allow other geographers to experience and develop a passion for fieldwork.

Awarded to a full-time PhD student in good standing who is studying Cultural Geography, based on academic achievement. To be eligible, a student must be in Years 2 to 4 of a PhD program and be undertaking research on some cultural process or cultural phenomenas spatial impact on the human environment. Candidates can obtain an application through the Graduate Affairs Committee in the Department of Geography by presenting their research prospectus. A committee in the Department of Geography, with at least one representative who is a current member of the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, will select the recipient. Award recipients are eligible to receive this scholarship more than once throughout their academic career at Western. This award was established through Foundation Western.

Awarded to a full-time graduate student in Geography based on academic achievement (minimum 78% average) and financial need. Preference will be given to a student in Year 2 of the Master's program or Years 2 to 4 of the PhD program, who is conducting research in the area of environment and sustainability within a rural context. Candidates can obtain through the Graduate Program in the Department of Geography an application outlining their research, financial need, and projected costs of their field-work expenses. A committee in the Department of Geography, with at least one representative who is a current member of the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, will select the recipient. This bursary was established by friends and family through Foundation Western to honor Michael J. Troughton (PhD Geography '70) who, upon his retirement, was the longest-serving member of the Geography Department at Western.

Awarded annually to the best two students enrolled in a Geography and Environment graduate program who have been judged to be the best Teaching Assistants during the previous academic year. Students may not win the award more than twice.

The recipients are selected by the Department based on the Teaching Assistant evaluations conducted each term. Award winners are announced in May.
This Fellowship was established by those associated with Edward G. Pleva during his first 25 years at the University of Western Ontario. Only graduates of a Geography and Environment program will be eligible for funding. This Fellowship is awarded each year to a full-time student enrolled in a graduate program in Geography and Environment in order of the following priorities:
Graduates of UWO Honours Geography enrolled in the first year program leading to degree of Master of Arts or Master of Science.
Graduates of any university enrolled as per (i) above.
Holders of a Master's degree from UWO or other university who are enrolled in the first year of a program of full-time studies at UWO leading to the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Geography.
A student entering second year of the Master's degree program enumerated above in (i) (ii) and (iii).
A student entering second year of the PhD program in (iii) above.
A student may hold the award only once in each degree program.

Awarded annually to full-time Master or Doctoral students in the Department of Geography and Environment. Awards will be based on academic achievement and will enable students to travel to and attend and present papers or posters at scholarly conferences and institutes to advance their knowledge and capabilities in this field of study. The recipient will be selected by the Chair of the Department of Geography and Environment from recommendations made by the Graduate Affairs Committee of the Department of Geography and Environment, with at least one member of the selection committee holding membership in the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. This award was made possible by a generous gift from an anonymous donor.

The Esri award is an industry-sponsored award designed to support top students conducting GIS research using Esri software/technology. This award was established by Esri Canada Limited, a leader in GIS software. Submission requirements:
- Resume/CV (Candidates must show significant course work and/or research using Esri technology/software).
- Academic transcript (minimum 78% GPA). Transcript will be supplied on your behalf.
- A one-page proposal of how the student will use Esri software/technology for their research.
- A letter of support from the student’s supervisor.

How to apply?
Send all required documents (transcript will be provided on your behalf) to the Graduate Administrator before the due date. Award winners may be asked to provide a presentation to Esri about how the software supports(ed) their research and/or developed their GIS skills. The selection committee will be chosen by the Associate Dean, Graduate Education, Policy and Planning, Faculty of Social Science, who will also be an ex-officio member of the committee.

Western University Funding
The Faculty of Social Science Graduate Research Awards Fund (GRAF) is designed to support the costs of research undertaken by full-time graduate students enrolled in an approved graduate program leading to a research degree. Applicants must be engaged in doing research as part of their degree requirements to be eligible for a GRAF award. Students past their normal funding period are not eligible. Awarded to graduate students registered in the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and enrolled in any graduate program in the Faculty of Social Sciences who can demonstrate financial need and are maintaining a minimum 78% average. Recipients will be selected by the Dean of Social Science upon consultation with the Department Chairs and committees within the Faculty of Social Science. Recipients must meet OSOTF eligibility requirements. Value: 4 at $3000 each
Students must meet the following :
1) Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident or protected person and resident of Ontario for 12 consecutive months prior to the beginning of post-secondary studies.
2) Pass a needs criteria. This means that anyone HOLDING a major scholarship (i.e., from tri-council, OGS, Trudeau etc.) are not eligible.

There is no internal IDRC application deadline like there is for the other agencies mentioned here. There is also a federal government list of international scholarships, some of which are country-of-origin specific.
