Admission Requirements

The Department of Geography & Environment coordinates its admission process with Western’s School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (SGPS). Please consult Western’s Admission Requirements page and guidelines for Applying to Western in addition to the information found below.

Securing a supervisory commitment is required before applying to our graduate program. Applicants must find a supervisor whose research interests align with their own. The program is research-focused, with a thesis as its core component.

Research opportunities are available at both the Master’s and PhD levels in the following areas:

GPA Requirement
Eligibility for funding in the form of teaching assistantships and internal scholarships requires a minimum of 78% for domestic students (Canadian or Permanent Residents) and 80% for international students. With few exceptions, only those students eligible for funding are admitted. Similarly, exceptionally strong Masters students may be considered for promotion (upgrading) to the PhD program without completing the Masters degree. Students interested in a Collaborative Specialization apply for graduate admission to Geography and Environment and subsequently apply to the Collaborate Specialization early in their first term of the program.

Language Requirement
Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of their proficiency in the use of the English language by a satisfactory* achievement within the last two years in one of the following:

The Department of Geography and Environment does not require applicants to submit GRE scores, but these can be submitted in support of an application.
