Master’s Programs (MA & MSc)
The MA and MSc programs are two-year thesis-based degrees combining coursework and independent research tailored to each student’s interests.
Key Features:
- Three Core Courses:
GEOG 9998 – Debates in Geographic Thought
GEOG 9099 – Research Design and Presentation
One approved Graduate Methods Course (qualitative, quantitative, GISc, or field methods) - Two additional electives chosen based on research interests
- Strong emphasis on fieldwork, academic writing, and professional skill development
Program Components:
- Orientation and departmental retreat (mandatory for new students)
- Three diagnostic meetings with Advisory Committee
- Completion of five graduate-level courses
- Approved thesis proposal
- Thesis research, writing, and defense
- Final thesis submission
Supervision:
MA/MSc students are guided by an Advisory Committee (Supervisor plus at least one Advisor) responsible for overseeing all aspects of the student's academic path, from proposal to thesis defense.
Upgrade to PhD
Exceptional Master’s students may be eligible to upgrade to the PhD program upon successful completion of their coursework. Details are outlined in the Graduate Student Handbook.
