PhD in Geography and Environment

Doctoral Program (PhD)

The PhD is a four-year research degree focused on producing a dissertation that contributes original knowledge to Geography and Environment.

Key Features:

  • Mandatory Course: GEOG 9998 – Debates in Geographic Thought
  • Additional Courses: Minimum of two graduate-level courses chosen with the Supervisor and Advisory Committee
  • Comprehensive Exam and Thesis Proposal required
  • Field experiences, seminars, and departmental presentations
  • Opportunity to develop teaching, research, and communication skills

Program Components:

  • Attendance at department orientation and retreat
  • Two diagnostic meetings in Year 1; at least one annually thereafter
  • Completion of three graduate courses
    (note: Western Master's graduates must take three new courses, excluding GEOG 9998)
  • Comprehensive exam and approved thesis proposal
  • Thesis research, writing, and defense
  • Participation in the Departmental Presentation Seminar
  • Presentation at an academic conference
  • Final thesis submission

Supervision:
Each PhD student is supported by a Thesis Supervision Committee, consisting of the Supervisor and at least two additional faculty members. This committee provides formal guidance through regular meetings, while students are encouraged to seek broader faculty mentorship.
