Course Information
There is a wide variety of graduate courses to choose from in Geography and Environment. The style of course varies, from one-on-one specialized courses, to larger enrolment courses.
Master’s Program: Students must take five course, three of which are mandatory. Debates in Geographic Thought (Geography 9998) introduces students to the diversity of philosophical and theoretical approaches to Geography by engaging with current debates in the discipline. Students learn how different approaches inform research practice, and thus how to locate their own research within a wider intellectual and disciplinary context. Research Design and Presentation (Geography 9099) is a practical course leading towards the production and presentation of a provisional thesis proposal. The logical structure of proposals and the substance of the arguments are reviewed and rehearsed across a broad spectrum of research design strategies. Masters students must also take a Graduate-level Methods Course that constitutes instruction in qualitative, quantitative, GISc, or field methods, be it within the geography department or a related discipline. A minimum of two additional courses is required.
Doctoral Program: Students must take three courses, one of which is mandatory. A minimum of two additional courses is required.
Course registration must be completed at the beginning of every term. Self-enrolment is completed after you have consulted fully with your supervisor.
Please be aware that students may take a maximum of one course from any one instructor, excluding the mandatory Debates in Geographic Thought (GEOG 9998), Research Design (GEOG 9099), and Graduate-level Methods Courses. All students may take a maximum of one Advanced Studies course under their supervisor (Geographies 9200, 9300, 9400, 9500, 9600).
Students are responsible for maintaining continuous registration with the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. This requires registration and payment of fees every term. Consult the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies Calendar for details on registration regulations.
