Program Information

The Department of Geography and Environment at Western offers the doctoral degree and two Masters degrees, an MA and  MSc. There is opportunity to obtain graduate education in a wide range of areas of geographic knowledge, research and applications.

Our graduate programs provide a blend of formal instruction, seminar discussions, personal supervision, a wide array of field experiences in many regions of the world, and the opportunity to practice and improve communication, teaching and research skills. Graduates go on to academic careers, teaching professions or government and industry careers.

The PhD is a research degree in which the dissertation, a contribution of original knowledge to Geography and Environment is the primary focus. The MA and MSc degrees in Geography and Environment are two-year programs that combine course work with a thesis and are tailored to the needs and interests of each Masters student.

We also participate in innovative collaborative and interdisciplinary programs. See our Collaborative Specializations for details.
