Computing Facilities

Big Data Computing Lab 

The use of this computing laboratory is restricted to students registered in specific Social Science courses that utilize this room. The Big Data Lab features 48 student stations plus an instructor station. Each student workstation is equipped with a PC suitable for processing large geospatial datasets and offers a range of GIS, remote sensing and statistical software packages. The lab supports not only Geography's intensive teaching needs, but that of other Departments within the Faculty.

This lab is accessed by your Western ID card. 

The Big Data lab contains a projector, LCD screens, CPU, VGA port for laptop, document camera, web camera, Kapp84, Toshiba print station, and whiteboards.

Software available in the lab includes Windows 10, Adobe Reader, ArcGIS Desktop 10.6, ArcGIS Pro, Geomatica 2017, Google Earth Pro, SPSS Statistics 25, SAS, Inkscape, MS Office Professional Plus 2016, Notepad ++, NVivo 12, QGIS 3.0, R for Windows, R Studio.

Geographic Information Systems Lab (GISCI)  

The use of this micro computing laboratory is restricted to students registered in specific Geography courses, graduate students and faculty. The GIS lab is open year round with 24 hour card swipe access.

Software available in the lab includes ESRI ArcGIS, PCI Geomatics, Idrisi, MS-Office, Photoshop and CorelDraw.

Graduate Computing Lab

The use of this micro computing laboratory is restricted to graduate students and departmental personnel only.

The Graduate Lab contains ten (10) Pentium IV computers, a high speed B/W printer, document scanner and a slide scanner.

Software available in the lab includes ESRI ArcGIS, Idrisi, PCI Geomatics, ENVI, eCognition, MS-Office and Photoshop.
